Crucified Christ bridges ancient biblical suffering with the modern Black experience of racial terror by revealing crucifixion for what it was: a public execution meant to shame, torture, and destroy. In that light, the cross becomes more than a religious symbol, it becomes a mirror of America’s lynching tree, echoing the lynching of Emmett Till and the fatal police shootings of unarmed Black Americans whose lives are treated as disposable.
This design frames a Black Jesus as a “lynchee,” exposing how empire uses violence to police the margins and protect the powerful. It confronts White theological supremacy by rejecting any faith that romanticizes the cross while ignoring the suffering of Black communities today. At the heart of liberation theology is the truth that God is not neutral in the face of oppression. Crucified Christ declares God’s solidarity with the victims of racial violence, systemic injustice, and every crucified body still crying out for liberation.
